Franklin Parrasch Gallery is pleased to announce Sara Gernsbacher: Broke Peace Bloom, an exhibition of new wall-based works by the Los Angeles artist. Working with silicone, pigments, and spray paint, Gernsbacher explores the sculptural capacity and intrinsically figurative properties of her materials.

Informed by her background in analog photography, Gernsbacher, channeling a photographer’s gestural confidence, allows her silicone forms to flow intuitively, encouraging them, like specters, to take on their own shape. In the tradition of artists such as Bruce Nauman and Eva Hesse, who have in the past worked with latex in both wall work and sculpture, the corporeality present in Gernsbacher’s silicone works are similarly consuming in their tactility and implied eroticism. The artist’s considered use of silicone engages the dynamic nature of her medium. Its slickness, elasticity, and sensuality lies in contrast to its handling; in their final state, many of Gernsbacher’s works contain tiny remnants from her studio such as flecks of paint and imprints from the concrete floor. Her forms exhibit no preciousness, instead referencing a personal instantaneous energy. The work evades categorization; it is decisive and confident and demands no activation from the viewer or surroundings.
