Franklin Parrasch Gallery is pleased to announce the inaugural exhibition in our new project space at 548 West 22nd Street: Peter Alexander: 1969-1972.The show, which comprises a selection of Alexander’s work in wax and cast resin, focuses on the artist’s early inquiries into the optical and formal possibilities of his media.
The two resin sculptures on view each exemplify Alexander’s nuanced use of color as he begins to navigate the relationships between pigment, luminosity, and volume. Additionally, a selection of wax drawings facilitates a glimpse into Alexander’s process and his exploration of color, space, density, and mass. As precursors to the resin sculptures, these works on paper highlight Alexander’s chromatic and spatial investigations through the layered application of wax and color; the dimensional works project the same effect as they interact with light and their ambient surroundings.
Peter Alexander has been widely exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide since the mid-1960s. This is Alexander’s fourth exhibition at Franklin Parrasch Gallery in the past ten years.
Alexander’s work is currently on view in Foundation 20 21’s show Venice in Venice (June 4-July 31, 2011), and will also be featured in the upcoming Pacific Standard Time exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (September 25, 2011-January 22, 2012). Recent shows include Peter Alexander + Sarah Braman at Franklin Parrasch Gallery (November 4-December 18, 2010); Primary Atmospheres at David Zwirner Gallery (January 8-February 6, 2010); Swell at Friedrich Petzel, Metro Pictures, and Nyehaus (June 30-August 6, 2010); and Peter Alexander: Resin Works, 1965-2009 at Nyehaus (September 9-October 31, 2009).
