Franklin Parrasch Gallery is pleased to present A Visual Sympathy for Modernism. This three-person exhibition features a selection of paintings and drawings from Rita Ackermann, Jeff Elrod, and Jason Fox. When viewed collectively the work exposes a dichotomy between dominant color use in modernist painting and the humanism of sympathetic painterly concern.

Rita Ackermann was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1968. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Budapest and at The New York School of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture. Ackermann’s paintings, collages and drawings use a variety of media to construct narrative through color, space and imagined characters.

Jeff Elrod was born in Irving, Texas in 1966. After living and working in New York for the majority of the past two decades, Elrod now resides in Marfa, Texas. Elrod’s paintings are first executed digitally, making his sketches with a computer mouse. These sketches are then translated into paintings on canvas; contradicting the supposed supremacy of technology over the handmade object.

Jason Fox was born in Yonkers, New York in 1964. He received a BFA from Cooper Union and an MFA from Columbia. In Fox’s paintings he references a myriad of pop and cult figures while using a bold and minimal color palette to simultaneously draw from and subvert pop culture.
